Another famous landmark is the King Faisal Mosque, which is the biggest mosque in Sharjah and was built to honour King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who was responsible for financing the development of Sharjah before the discovery of oil. The neighbouring City of Ajman is famous for its ship building industry. The magnificent museum, housed in an ancient fort, was once the residence and seat of government of the ruler of Sharjah. Here you can walk through the promenades overlooking the sea beneath the museum’s 180-metre diameter dome, composed of almost 8,000 unique metal stars set in a complex geometric pattern. When sunlight filters through, it creates a moving ‘rain of light’ beneath the dome, reminiscent of the overlapping palm trees in the UAE’s oases.
